August Kirkistown Blog- with Jake Byrne

After my best weekend of my season so far at Kirkistown in the Global GT Light, I am now finally seeing the results of all of my efforts. Having done some intense training after the last race at Mondello Park in the Global GT Light it proved to be worthwhile!!
We headed to Kirkistown for their end of summer race day on the Ards Peninsula. Due to budget unfortunately I was unable to test on Friday so I wasn’t sure what my pace would be in qualifying. As it turned out my pace was fantastic, all of the laps in my RF90 over the year proved to be worth their weight in gold posting a time a second quicker than the fastest lap at Kirkistown from the previous season!! This time gave me pole for both races of the day!!
Having realised how not to do a rolling start from the previous meeting at Mondello, I managed to keep the lead for the first lap of the race – but it was very close. Enjoying the speed of the Kirkistown circuit I gapped second place, Max Drennan my championship rival, and stretched the gap for the remainder of the race. I also had the added bonus of posting the fastest lap of the race which turned out to be a lap record too!!
So with one race win, one pole and one lap record I set out to complete the weekend.
I kept the lead again at the start of race two and again held the lead for the first lap. Bernie Braden using the good old Kirkistown slipstreaming and aided by the closeness of the Global racing dived up the inside into the hairpin causing the next two cars to sneak through also. I sat back in fourth for a couple of laps watching the 5th place car, Paul Fitzpatrick, closing the gap to the leading four cars. When Paul got a bit too close for comfort I made my move for third and then up to the lead. I then gapped 2nd place again and proceeded to manage that gap until the end of the race.
The Kirkistown weekend was hugely successful with two poles, two wins a fastest lap and a new lap record!! It also meant that the race for the championship closed up with only 9 points between 1st and 2nd and a further point between 2nd and 3rd. The championship finale will be at the Leinster Trophy weekend on the Mondello Park International Circuit on the 15th of September. A huge thank you to ABR Sports for preparing a fantastic car!! Also a huge thank you to Jennifer Tonin (JayTee Photographic) for the photograph!!
