Breaking News- Jake Byrne is MI Dunlop Driver of The Month.
June 18, 2014 by Motorsport Ireland
19 year-old Jake Byrne from Blackwood, near Naas, has been selected as the Dunlop Young Racing Driver of the Month for May. The Kildare driver’s performances during the month, which included third places in the hotly contested Formula Ford 1600 races at both Bishopscourt and Kirkistown, leave him holding second place in the National Formula Ford Championship. He also started from pole position in both races at the opening Kirkistown meeting and set fastest lap in one of them.
Jake began his career at the age of 10 in Kart Racing, moving to the Junior Rallycross series in 2010 and he also contested the Ginetta Junior Racing Championship when it began later that year.
He won the Ginetta Junior title in 2012, and was champion in the Global GT Lights class last year, winning five of the ten rounds despite being the youngest driver in the class.
Jake is a third year Engineering student in Trinity College, Dublin, and plans to complete all of this year’s Irish FF1600 Championships in his Ray GR13, as well as the major end-of-season races in Britain, the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch and the Walter Hayes Trophy race at Silverstone. His sponsors are Grrana Energy, ABR Sports, gearboxman.com and Sophos.
Having been selected as the second Dunlop Driver of the Month for the 2014 season, Jake is now a contender for the prestigious Dunlop Motorsport Ireland Young Racing Driver of the Year Award and the historic Sexton Trophy. This award is presented annually and is supported by Dunlop, the Irish Sports Council and Motorsport Ireland.
