Bye Bye Corsa, Hello Civic!- with Tonya Fortune.
May 27, 2014 by Tonya Fortune
Well, the second round of my Dunlop Championship campaign took place at the Carlow Stages Rally on May 11th. However there was quite an unexpected change in the lead up to the event, with the purchase of my new car! I decided to take the plunge in April, and have now made the move to Class 3, in a Honda Civic Type R.
Luckily, I had the opportunity to take the car for somewhat of a test drive on the opening rounds of this year’s Naylor Engineering Hillclimb & Sprint Championship, with the first round being my local event in Wexford on the 12th and 13th of April. I was rather apprehensive on Saturday morning, considering I hadn’t so much as sat in the car up to the practice run that day, but soon started to settle into the car, managing a 2nd in the ladies class Saturday, and 1st on Sunday. Having also opted to sign up for the championship, it left me 5th in class 9, with another two rounds set to be held in Wexford at the beginning of July.
So, next on the agenda was Carlow! We set out on the Sunday morning, with nothing only the intentions of getting our first rally finish in our new car. We were also hoping to score some good points for the Dunlop, having had to re-register for our new class, therefore starting from scratch in the battle for class 3 honours.
Conditions were difficult over the weekend, and combined with new tyres we couldn’t seem to find any grip for most of the event. Our opening loop saw us put in a solid run, learning the car as we went along. Stage four, the first of the second loop, saw us slide out and mount a ditch, and this seemed to majorly affect our pace for the next two stages, my confidence being slightly affected, along with the problems getting grip. Thankfully I managed to put this behind me, and our final three stages, although not on the pace of the first loop, we were far more confident and consistent.
Our solid driving paid off in the end, netting us 3rd in class on the day, and we were also thrilled to pick up maximum points for the Dunlop, which put us into joint 1st position in class. The next round we hope to contest will be the Stonethrowers Rally on the 10th August, and with plans to get a bit more driving experience on the next round of the Hillclimb Championship, we should be on a much better pace.
So before I finish up, I’d finally like to say a big thank you to our latest sponsor to come on board, Martina Doran at Railway Yard Gallops, your support is very much appreciated! Also thanks to all who helped us out for Carlow, and to Damian on the notes, for keeping me on the straight and narrow (mostly!) for the weekend.
Until next time,
