Derek Tohill is ERC Champion again!
September 16, 2013 by Johnny Loix
Derek Tohill from Dublin in Ireland became the 2013 FIA European Rallycross Champion in the Touring Car category this weekend (September 14-15) at Greinbach in Austria. The PartsforCars.ie supported driver won the 8th round of the 2013 RallycrossRX series and holds now an insurmountable lead on the second in the standings. For Tohill it’s his second European title during his Rallycross career after already being crowned European champion back in 2010. “I came to Austria with a comfortable lead in the championship on Czech driver Roman Castoral. Therefore the target for me this weekend was to finish ahead of him and to try to secure myself the title,” the Irishman explaining his strategy. And the strategy worked out well. Nevertheless he got beaten once by the Czech in a qualification heat, he was classified on top of the intermediate classification after setting fastest times in the first and fourth qualifying runs. Afterwards he won his semi-final allowing him to start the final from the front row. Also during the final Tohill managed it to stay ahead of Castoral all the time. Running second for most of the time during the 6-lap-final he managed it to overtake Swede Robin Larsson in the end and won his fourth event this season and his second European Rallycross title. “I’m very happy now,” Tohill said after the final. “I had the better start when the final went underway. However, Larsson made contact with me in the opening lap and therefore I was forced to run second most of the time. On the other hand, and also because of the contact, I absolutely wanted to win this final. I’m very glad I managed it and I’m very happy for the team to take the 2013 European Rallycross TouringCar title to Ireland.” The next event for Derek Tohill and the team is the final round of the 2013 RallycrossRX series taking place at Buxtehude in Germany next weekend (September 21-22).
