Irish GT Ace Signs ELMS Deal
January 30, 2013 by Tony Gregory
Newly established Ram Racing is delighted to announce the signing of Matt Griffin. The Northamptonshire-based Irishman will be joining Johnny Mowlem in one of the team’s new GTE Ferrari 458 Italia’s for the European Le Mans Series, which will be based at a new purpose-equipped facility on the edge of the Silverstone circuit in Northamptonshire.
The 30-year-old, a former British GT Cup Champion, has made quite an impact on international GT racing in the last couple of years, competing successfully in championships ranging from the FIA World Endurance Championship to International GT Open as well as racing closer to home in British GT. In all of these he has been behind the wheel of a Ferrari, and has worked closely in testing and developments with the Italian marque’s GT development partner and constructor, Michelotto Automobili.
Team Principal of Ram Racing, Dan Shufflebottom, said that Griffin was a natural choice for them: “With the amount of experience Matt has accumulated over the last couple of years, he’s naturally a man in demand and we’re really pleased that he chose to put his faith is us for the ELMS. We think that between him and Johnny we’ve got a winning combination, and the specific Ferrari knowledge that Matt is able to bring with him will be a real advantage.”
“We’re still finalising the line-up for our second car,” continued the former F1 employee who is very much enjoying GT racing, “but that’s going well, and we can’t wait to get going. Entering the Dubai 24 Hours proved to us that, although we need some more miles under our belts in testing, we can definitely mix it with the more established order. We don’t just want to mix it with them in the ELMS, we want to rock them to the core!”
Matt has not yet announced the remainder of his 2013 racing plans, but is really happy to be joining Ram Racing and is excited about the prospect of driving with veteran British sportscar and GT star, Johnny Mowlem. “While Ram is a new team, there’s an awful lot of experience there right the way through the team and I think there’s a lot of synergy about what we want to achieve this year. For me it’s a massive bonus to drive with someone like Johnny, and I’ve got a massive amount of respect for what he’s achieved. I think we’ll work really well together and hopefully I’ll learn a lot from him as well.”
Matt’s first race of the season will be the teams home round at Silverstone on the 12th-13 April 2013.
