Leinster Trophy Blog- with Jake Byrne

The Global GT Lights were racing on Sunday at the Leinster Trophy race weekend. Qualifying turned out to be very wet and a last minute decision was made to put wet tyres on. Unfortunately a brake balance issue prematurely ended my qualifying session in the gravel trap up at Dunlop after a big lock-up! Unfortunately I didn’t complete a lap in qualifying and had to start at the back of the grid for both races!
With the car repaired after my excursion, I made my way to the grid for my first race of the day. It was quite wet, so a full wet setup was put on the cars. When the red lights went out the pack of Global GT Lights made their way down to the first corner. There was contact between two cars in front of me and all of a sudden cars were going in every direction. This made a nice little gap for me up the inside which meant I was able to go from 9th to 3rd by turn 2!! I quickly hunted down Mark Braden and then Paul Fitzpatrick to take the lead and eventually win the race!
Race 2, on the other hand, was pretty much dry meaning we had to change the cars back to a dry set up! Starting at the back again I made my way up to third by the end of the first lap with Paul Fitzpatrick and Max Drennan in front of me. Paul ran wide into Tarzan 1, battling a braking problem he had all day, which meant it was just Max and I duking it out for the win. As it turned out whichever one of us won the race would be the champion! The rest of the race turned out to be a hammer and tongs battle with little dicing but both of us pushing as hard as possible! Max retook the lead with a few laps to go and on the penultimate lap I took it back and pushed hard to gap him! On the final lap I got the fastest lap of the race, the win and the championship!!
A huge thank you to ABR Sports for giving me a fantastic car!! My next race will be at the Martin Donnelly Trophy this weekend in Kirkistown.
