MOTO GP test update- with Jim Halligan

March 10, 2014 by Jim Halligan

The 2014 MOTO GP season testing took place at SEPANG recently and the Doctor,  Valentino Rossi,  topped the times- lapping  a second faster than the 2013 times! Unsurprisingly, he is delighted with the performance  of the 2014 machine and the lack of those handling  issues that plagued him in 2013.

“First of all I am very happy because I am in first position and I did a good lap. It’s positive because the 2014 tyres in the first test here we were a second slower in the time attack compared with today,” said Rossi.

Dani Pedrosa equalled Rossi late in the day, showing the HRC bosses that his place in the team is well deserved but missing was the dominant force and 2013 champion Marc Marquez- sitting out these tests because of the broken leg sustained in an off road training accident  a couple of weeks ago. This will have no affect on the youngster as he’s bounced back from much bigger injuries such as double vision after a huge crash in Moto 2 proving how tough he really is.

Present at the test were the Factory Suzuki Test team headed by Tom O Kane and riders Randy De Puniet and Nobuatsu Aoki, Randy having the 12th quickest time, this might seem irrelevant but that’s a the Suzuki’s comeback to this class and with the progress from this they will be top 10, keeping a watchful eye on progress was Eugene Laverty- the other Suzuki test rider.

The biggest news was that Ducati are running in the Open Class in MOTO GP this poses   a lot of questions as their allowed to run with more fuel but must run control ECU from Dorna and Magneti Mareilli and softer tire options? This rule was to be for the private teams and I wouldn’t be happy seeing Ducati beat Rossi and Co with more fuel and better tires.
