My GT Debut- with Sean Doyle.
August 29, 2013 by Sean Doyle
At the weekend I was driving in the OPH.ie GT class at Mondello Park. Myself and Jake Byrne were sharing the fantastic RT2000 which was supplied to us by Mondello Park! It was the first time either of us had ever driven the car and what a fantastic car it was! On Saturday we had a couple of niggly problems with the brakes but we got it sorted for the afternoon! Unfortunately there was a few showers Saturday afternoon and we didn’t get much running.
Sunday morning was looking dull and damp, we weren’t sure if we would need wet tyres or not but thankfully it dried up for our qualifying at eleven O’clock. We qualified fourth on the grid which was in and around where we thought we would be!
After qualifying I went to work- instructing in the Mondello Park Race Experience out on the International Loop. I worked till around 3.30 then made my way back to the paddock for the race and my first time racing the RT2000! I did the
first stint of the race which meant I had to do the start, I have never done a start in one of these cars and I was a little dubious about what was going to happen! When the lights went out I got a reasonable start but the GT3 Porsche of Alan Kessie just flew past as if I was standing still! We didn’t get too far before the race was res flagged and we had to re-grid. When the lights went out this time I had a better idea of what the car was capable of off the line! My start was better and I kept with Kessie through the corners but in a straight line he just sped past but again once we got to the braking zone I made up what I lost on the straights but eventually he broke our little dice up when he made a break for it and got a slight gap on me! There was only a short window for the pit stops and with it only open for 5 minutes I headed in early and did the driver change with Jake Byrne. When he left the pits he maintained the gap with Kessie and we finished fourth overall and third in our GT1 class. I would like to thank Mondello Park for the use of the car- it was a great experience!
