Niall Murray wins Dunlop Motorsport Ireland Young Racing Driver of the Year Award
December 12, 2013 by P1 Digital
Formula Ford Festival winner Niall Murray has been selected as the 2013 Dunlop Motorsport Ireland Young Racing Driver of the Year. The award, which carries a prize of a fully funded season of racing in Formula Ford along with the prestigious Sexton Trophy, is awarded annually with the support of Dunlop, Motorsport Ireland and the Irish Sports Council.
The Murray family are no strangers to winning this award as Niall and his brother Eoin have now become the first brothers to have both won the Sexton Trophy.
Niall has spent the last two seasons racing in the British Ginetta Junior Championship having graduated from the inaugural Ginetta Junior Ireland championship in 2010. Narrowly missing out on winning the UK championship in 2012, he made the transition to Formula Ford in 2013. Despite entering a series known to be highly competitive and featuring many seasoned regulars, Murray was instantly racing with the front runners and was never outside the top five all season. Taking his debut Formula Ford race victory during the season at Kirkistown, Murray finished his season racing for the prestigious Walter Hayes Trophy at Silverstone and the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch. Previously won by several past and present Formula 1 drivers, Murray started the Festival Final from fourth on the grid. Easily one of the most committed drivers in the field, he worked his way into the lead and in winning added his name to the history books.
Speaking after the awards ceremony in Dublin today, a thrilled Niall said, “I’m absolutely over the moon to have won this award. I’ve been shortlisted in the past but this year I felt I had the very best chance of winning it, but the other two nominees were also very strong so it could have gone to any of us. This award is very special to me as its been won by my brother Eoin twice before so it’s great to emulate him and add my name to it also. There are so many people who have helped me get to this point, so I would just like to say an overall thank you to everyone who has helped me in my career so far but particularly Dunlop, Motorsport Ireland and the Irish Sports Council for making this award happen. I’m really looking forward to racing this superb looking car in 2014!”
