Sophie Byrne: My season so far
January 8, 2013 by Sophie Byrne
The first race of the Rallycross Season was 21st October 2012. I was excited, and the track conditions weren’t too bad with small patches of rain, but a blue sky. The car was sitting there waiting for me, and it was ready for a serious battle. The Juniors had two practice sessions, just to get back in the saddle, and the first heat went well as I secured first place. On this occasion we had four heats, the next three following well with two third places and an additional first place. I was very happy, having had great battles with James Huddleston and Dylan Curley. After all four heats, I picked up pole position for the final. This was serious for me, as I wanted to win the first race of the season, making my mark and taking lead of the championship. All I had to do was get a good start, keep a cool head and as they say ‘keep her lit!’, and that’s what I did. Huddleston was on my tail for the entire race (4nd on the grid) and Curley (2th) on his, finishing me in 1st place, closely followed by James and then Dylan. All in a good days racing.
The second meeting of the season was on the 25th of November, with conditions worse than the previous race, raining throughout the day, and a wet surface. The plan today was to do the same as the last day, but things didn’t go to plan, and the first heat was a disaster as a hit from behind caused a spin and a small bit of damage to the car, and I finished in last place. Things were looking up in the second heat as I placed second, but things headed back downhill as I didn’t finish the third heat, and there was no fourth heat to make things back up. It was pouring rain and I placed last on the grid for the final, but I went out all guns blazing to make it back to the top. By the first corner I made it to second place, and remained there for the rest of the race, Curly taking first place, and unfortunately Huddleston had a DNF, therefore Jake Dooley taking third place. It wasn’t a fantastic weekend, but I’m still leading the championship and intend to make a full come-back for the next weekend!
