Scheckter and Malkin make up the front row for the Leinster Trophy.
Round 18 of the EFDA Euroseries was also the feature race for the prestigious Leinster Trophy at Mondello Park in 1999. Tomas Scheckter, son of ’79 F1 champion Jody, lines up on pole for this one alongside Darren Malkin with future Jordan F1 driver Takuma Sato right in there too. Michael Keohane, James Murphy and Vivion Daly amongst others uphold... [Read more...]

All started out quite well.....
I remember this one like it was yesterday- greasy qualifying conditions put me on pole for the big one, the televised race, ahead of all the fancied runners. All went wrong for me mid race, can’t remember what went wrong- hard to believe it’s 20 years ago this year! The end of the race is a classic though as Owens and O’Reilly go at... [Read more...]

David Wright lines up on pole position for the Leinster Trophy
In 1993, with no Euroseries visiting, the Leinster Trophy was awarded to the domestic Formula Opel class. There were two heats, with the results of these deciding the grid for this, the final. David Wright starts from pole but watch out for the scrap between Morgan Dempsey Jnr and Wayne Douglas, coming up from a mid grid position. Mike Edgar starts... [Read more...]

250cc Superkarts were fast and spectacular at Mondello Park.
Another clip from the Leinster Trophy at Mondello in 1985. This time, it is the 250cc Superkarts with James Deery, John Buggy and Dominic Murray starring- watch out for former Fiat racer Austin Bishop too. The Superkarts show just how bumpy Mondello was back then- in fact some of them get proper tankslappers on the main straight! They weren’t... [Read more...]

Cliff Dempsey was a FF1600 frontrunner before he set up his sucessful race team. Image from Con Connolly.
Another cracker from FF1600. In this one, the unbeaten Vivion Daly gets jumped off the line by the spectacular Fionn Murray in the works Crossle. The ensuing battle is enthralling and gets a little heated at times. Cliff Dempsey, John Coffey and Mike Edgar are not too far away, just in case they can pick up the pieces! Vivion and Fionn are sadly no... [Read more...]

Senna in the FF2000 Van Diemen RF82
Well here it is, the famous race where Senna blew everyone away at the 1982 Leinster Trophy. Joey Greenan and Pat Duffy give good accounts of themselves too, despite the Euroseries running different tyres to the domestic Irish series at the time. Despite the myth that Senna took Greenan around the outside at Duckhams, you can see here that Greenan slowed... [Read more...]

Jake at speed in his hastily repaired Global en route to the 2013 title!
The Global GT Lights were racing on Sunday at the Leinster Trophy race weekend. Qualifying turned out to be very wet and a last minute decision was made to put wet tyres on. Unfortunately a brake balance issue prematurely ended my qualifying session in the gravel trap up at Dunlop after a big lock-up! Unfortunately I didn’t complete a lap in qualifying... [Read more...]

Adam Mcaulay was the man to beat all year and convincingly took his first title in style- with a win! Image from cregornews.com
Rounds 9 and 10 of the Crowne Plaza National Formula Vee Championship at Mondello Park International were always going to be about championship contenders Adam Macaulay and Ray Moore but it was Trevor Delaney who stole the spoils in qualifying with a blistering lap to put him on pole by 0.8secs from Macaulay with Moore in third. Moore pulled his Bernard... [Read more...]

Fist aloft, Barry adds his name to a very exclusive list as he wins the Leinster Trophy at Mondello Park.
The Leinster Trophy weekend has always been the pinacle of the racing season in Ireland. It is steeped in history and folklore with stories of Irish and visiting drivers tussling to take home the most sought after prize in Irish racing. While I was at the now legendary 1982 meeting when a certain yellow helmet wearing Brazilian took the crown I was... [Read more...]

Jonny and the Mondiale proved more than a match for the more modern competition at Mondello!
It’s been a while since I’ve done a blog, it’s been a hectic few weeks between the last championship rounds at Kirkistown and the Leinster Trophy race weekend! To summarize- the last day at Kirkistown we were quick in testing on the Friday but unfortunately a carburettor issue in qualifying made it flood through the chicane, loosing... [Read more...]
