WRC Driver Rob Barrable won a hard fought Festival & with it the prestigious Vivion Daly Memorial Trophy.
What a brilliant weekends racing as the Formula Ford Festival was revived in Mondello with a trophy named after one of the all-time greats of Irish motorsport; Vivian Daly. I grew up watching Vivian racing Ffords and Opels and can still remember his 2FM, Abrakebabra, and XtraVision sponsored cars racing for wins at Mondello and Phoenix Park. I sat on... [Read more...]

O'Coileain tries to make a break early on...
1991 was the first year of the Formula Opel-Lotus series in Ireland. Vivion Daly and Morgan Dempsey Junior were generally at the front but former works Van Diemen driver Ruari O’Coileain in the Cliff Dempsey Racing machine was bang on the pace too. Series regular Joey Greenan had been sidelined after a pushbike accident and this meant there was... [Read more...]

The UK MG Metro Challenge visited The ‘Park in 1986 and somebody talked Billy Coleman into taking a drive in one. The results are hilarious with Billy describing his turn one tangle as a “Territorial Dispute”. Roger Eccles also brought his new Merc 190 over and blew away all the Production Saloons on the Saturday- the second race on... [Read more...]

Another cracker from FF1600. In this one, the unbeaten Vivion Daly gets jumped off the line by the spectacular Fionn Murray in the works Crossle. The ensuing battle is enthralling and gets a little heated at times. Cliff Dempsey, John Coffey and Mike Edgar are not too far away, just in case they can pick up the pieces! Vivion and Fionn are sadly no... [Read more...]

I know I am getting old when my articles start off talking about memories of childhood trips to Mondello- but I won’t apologise for it! Back then, I was more into saloons but once I started karting, I took a far keener interest in single seaters- and especially FF1600. Back in the day, there were so many entries that there were three races... [Read more...]

Over the years in Mondello there have been many different types of driver. There have been those who burst onto the scene, burned bright and faded fast, some have been dedicated clubmen who have been there for the craic and the joy of racing all carried along by the distant hope that they might sneak a win. Others have been quick but just not quick... [Read more...]
