Seconds out Round 2!!! At the Patch Fiesta/Mondello Fiesta Zetec Championship.
After a frantic day of running around collecting bits, petrol, new trolley jack, getting a tool box mounted on the trailer, wrapping all the breakable spare headlights, car loaded up and the straps checked for tightness for the …enth time I managed to get settled down to the first BBQ of the year along with several Corona and glass or two of vino, but it was off to bed at half ten. After all 5am!, yes 5am!!! Comes early.
Alarm goes up with a jump, the boys, Callum & Jack up, kettle boiled, flask filled, on the road for 5:20, collect the pit crew, Chris Anderson of W J Blair Accident Repairs who keep my car going, after all he’s the only one of us who knows what a spanner is really for!! We leave a dark Co Antrim at 5:45 with 232km to cover in 2hr 15min with a trailer on, we did it, arriving at Mondello Park for 8:02.
Find a space in the paddock, straps off, www.c-r-l.com car unloaded, and off to scrutiny, for a clean bill of health; stage 1 complete. Over for sign on, to see the ever cheery Fiesta coordinator, Jenny Senior. Great we’re good to go. Now to try bedding in the new “EBC yellow stuff” pads and vented disc combination during Qualifying 2 that I have been drawn in. not a good run during qualifying, I think the tyres were too hard, only managed a 1:12;816, leaving me well down the pecking order, even for the qualifying race. I had it all and more to do.
Ended up on p10 for the qualifying race, with only 12 spots available to make the Final, I had to get a good start and avoid the mayhem of turn 1. That done I drove a decent race getting up to 8th and assuring me of my place in the final.
Lunch break and a dander round the paddock, admiring a multitude of beautifully prepared race cars in all the classes, getting ready for an action packed afternoon at Mondello Park. Of course I had my ambassadorial role to promote the Kirkistown Ford Fiesta Zetec Cup to my many new friends and fellow competitors in the paddock, with several saying they’re going to make the journey north for some of the remaining events at Kirkistown on 31st May, 26th July, 30th Aug and 4th Oct. The more the merrier. Remember the All Ireland Fiesta Zetec Meeting at Bishopscourt in Downpatrick, Co. Down on the 10/11 May run by Leinster Motor Club, after all variety, they say, is the spice of life.
Final time, we were running ahead of schedule. Starting from p24 in the final, it seemed as I was parked at the exit to Dunlop, and could just make out the starter. Saw him wave a board, the lights came on and cars around me were already on the move!, the lights go out and I’m off with the aim to make up as many places as possible. With close racing with John McGovern and Mark O’Hara for most of the race, I managed to finish 19th or 20th I think, with no damage. That’s what racing is all about, and certainly the ability to have a race with several competitors no matter where you start on the grid.
Car loaded up and up the road, and yes that old adage of it never seems to take as long going home is still true. Home safe and sound with the feet up for 7:30pm
