Tohill ends his title winning ERC TouringCar campaign- and plans first Supercar Test!
September 24, 2013 by Johnny Loix
Derek Tohill was forced to retire from the TouringCar final during the last round of the 2013 FIA European Rallycross Championship – RallycrossRX – that went underway at Buxtehude in Germany this weekend (September 21-22). The Irishman, supported by PartsforCars.ie, won the 2013 TouringCar title already last weekend during the penultimate event of the European series.
“I am very happy I secured myself the title last weekend,” Tohill said after the final. “Therefore I could start in the race this weekend without any pressure. Unfortunately, that tricky first corner on the track doesn’t suit me well. Already during the heats I was struggling there and that was also the spot where it went wrong during the final. I was pushed by another driver and afterwards I was forced to retire with a damaged car.”
After the four qualification heats Tohill was classified second in the intermediate classification. He signed for a fourth fastest time twice, a third fastest and a second fastest time. After having won his semi-final the Ford driver was lined up on the front row for the last TouringCar final of the season. However, shortly after the start it went wrong in the first corner resulting in a sixth place overall. With the 2013 championship concluded Derek Tohill and the team are already focusing on the 2014 season. Derek Tohill: “In 2014 I will race in the SuperCar category. That’s for sure already, however, the whole plan and the details we still have to work out. A first step is a SuperCar test that has been offered to me, as 2013 TouringCar champion, by the championship promotor. In the beginning of October I will travel to Sweden and will test drive the VW Polo Mk5 of Swedish SuperCar racer Anton Marklund. The test will take place at Kinnekulle Ring prior to the final round of the Swedish Rallycross Championship.”
