Tohill endures character building weekend in Holjes

Irish FIA World Rallycross Championship competitor Derek Tohill endured a character building weekend at the fifth round of the championship at Holjes in Sweden, in front of a record crowd of almost 35,000 spectators.
Tohill’s troubles began in practice when technical issues slowed his Citroen DS3 Supercar, but things turned around and the PartsforCars driver led heat one, only to get landed on after the jump by Lukas Walfridson, giving Tohill a puncture, harming the race time. Keen to make up for lost ground in heat two, the Teng Tools supported driver made a good start, only to end up in the gravel trap on the outside of the first corner thanks to contact from another driver. Tohill finished both heats three and four, second in his heat three race, he won his heat four battle but again suffered some technical problems during the race and would end up 29th overall at the Intermediate Classification.
“We had some technical issues straight away in practice in Holjes, but the LD Motorsports team worked hard all weekend and did a very good job as usual. The result isn’t what we wanted by any means, but we still had some exciting races. It was great to get a heat race win in Holjes in heat four, that will always be special even if the time wasn’t amazing,” said the Millers Oils supported driver.”
Despite the tough weekend, Tohill is proud to have raced a Supercar at the ‘holy grail’ of rallycross, and is looking forward to the sixth round of the championship this weekend at Mettet in Belgium. “There is such a fantastic atmosphere at Holjes, the spectators are all so enthusiastic. It’s a special thing to race a Supercar in Sweden. Hopefully the track in Belgium will be a great equaliser, only a few drivers have tested there. Most of the races in the second half of the championship are new for almost everyone, people haven’t been testing at most of the newer tracks unlike the circuits we’ve been to for the last few rounds and I can’t wait to show what we can do.”
Also in action in Sweden was Tohill’s double European Rallycross Championship winning Ford Fiesta TouringCar, in the hands of Finnish driver Pekka Mustakallio. For the second event in succession, Mustakallio made it to the final. “Pekka had a great weekend, he stayed out of trouble and finished fifth. He might of got fourth but got pushed a bit in the final. I’m delighted for him and the team we have running the car, to make the TouringCar final in Sweden is a great result.”
