VIDEO- FF1600 Final from Mondello Park 1993

February 28, 2014 by Leo Nulty

With the new “Champion of Mondello” bringing Formula Ford back to Mondello for 2014 the timing of this one is quite good! In the early 90s FF1600 was very strong in Ireland- as can be seen from this grid! Having already run a C and B “Star of Tomorrow” race, the qualifiers battle it out in the “Ford of Ireland” A Race. In ’93, Dave Collier and Michael Duke were the class of the Star of Tomorrow series (despite Vee Champ Padraig Owens beating them to pole once in the wet in an ’86 Mondiale.) and by mid season they were pretty much on the pace of the A runners too. Ali Johnston driving the Golden Pages Swift, had already wrapped up the championship but multiple karting champion Derek Cunneely was on form in front of the TV cameras in the ex Jonny Kane Mondiale M91S. This was shaping up to be a classic FF1600 battle- until reigning Star of Tomorrow champion Mark O’Connor missed his braking into turn one with disastrous results. Still, it is entertaining and it closes right up at the end!
