Tommy Byrne returns to Mondello Park in the works Van Diemen with backing from OLA oils, Navan Shopping Centre and The Fairways Hotel. Speaking to Tommy recently, he remembers it well. “I broke first gear coming down to the line, and put my hand up. Ralph Firman jumped the barrier to ask what was wrong and as I was telling him- out of shot- an official lifted him by the neck and pushed him over the barrier back into the pitlane.” Despite Tommy’s hand waving, and probably due to the pressures of live TV, it soon becomes obvious that the race is going ahead. Tommy starts in 2nd gear and makes a reasonable fist of it, managing to hold off Joey Greenan for second as PJ Fallon takes the lead from the outside of the front tow in the Frank Nolan Crossle. Tommy soon reels him in though and once he retakes the lead, PJ has his work cut out holding off the charging Arnie Black, also Crossle mounted.
